The thesis is the original work that completes the training of the PhD candidate as a researcher. Its presentation and defence lead to the doctoral degree being awarded and qualifies the researcher to work independently in the field of R+D+i.
During this period, the "trainee researcher" or doctoral student is trained in skills and abilities that enable them to carry out research. Being awarded the doctoral thesis provides official evidence of the standard achieved in this regard, since it offers original results of the research carried out.
Who can submit a doctoral thesis?
To submit the doctoral thesis for its reading and defence, the student must be enrolled in one of the 29 doctoral programmes offered by the University of Valladolid, and be at least in their second year of enrolment.
Types of doctoral thesis
The thesis submitted must be, in its main body, single-authored and not previously published.
It must include a table of contents, an introduction, a body made up of clearly differentiated chapters, conclusions, and a bibliography.
In order to accredit the quality of the thesis, at least one scientific contribution related to the thesis must be presented. The date of acceptance of this contribution must be within the period in which the student has been enrolled in the doctoral studies.
If this contribution has been signed by two or more doctoral students, it can only endorse one thesis. In this case, co-authors will have to sign a waiver against presenting this same contribution to endorse another thesis. The criteria for interpreting this point have been established between the different doctoral programmes and the Doctoral Thesis Committee.
The thesis will be made up of a minimum of three scientific articles written by the PhD student and accepted or published in an impact publication outlet, in accordance with the ANECA criteria for the field of knowledge in which the thesis is presented, within the time period in which the student has been enrolled in the PhD programme.
It must include a table of contents, a broad introduction, a body with the different articles (complete and with bibliographical references), conclusions, and a bibliography. The introductory part is particularly important, since it will justify the relationship between the publications presented and their joint relevance, the objectives, and the methodology used.
In the case of an article signed by more than one author, a waiver from the co-authors against including the article in another thesis must be provided.
