Doctoral studies are regulated by Royal Decree 99/2011 of 28 January 2011, as amended by Royal Decree 576/2023. The purpose of this Royal Decree is to regulate the organisation of doctoral studies leading to the degree of Doctor. It is official and valid throughout the whole country.

The purpose of these regulations is to establish the procedure for declaring the equivalence of foreign higher education degrees to the academic level of doctorate.
Rector's Resolution establishing the reservation of places for students with disabilities in access to official university Master's degrees and Doctoral Programmes offered by the University of Valladolid. By virtue of this resolution, 5% of the places offered in the doctoral programmes are reserved for students with a recognised degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%.

Royal Decree 99/2011, as amended by Royal Decree 576/2023 and which regulates official doctoral studies, is the reference framework for the organisation of doctoral studies and, with regard to thesis supervision, it recommends a good practice guide for the supervision and monitoring of doctoral theses. This EsDUVa good practice guide contains recommendations on thesis supervision and tutoring of doctoral students taken from the legislation and rules of the University of Valladolid and its Doctoral School, with the aim of clarifying the role of the doctoral student’s thesis supervisor and tutor.
