• National scope: Doctoral studies are regulated by Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January 2011, as amended by Royal Decree 576/2023, of 4 July. The purpose of this Royal Decree is to regulate the organisation of doctoral studies leading to the award of the title of doctor. It is official and valid throughout the whole of the country.

• Scope of the University of Valladolid: The purpose of the rules for doctoral studies at the University of Valladolid is to regulate doctoral studies, from admission to a doctoral programme to when the doctoral thesis is presented and defended, in accordance with the aforementioned Royal Decree, and by virtue of the provisions of Article 107.2 of the Statutes of the University of Valladolid.

• Procedure for obtaining the “Industrial Doctorate” mention in the title of doctor at the University of Valladolid, as approved by agreement of the Steering Committee of the Doctoral School on 21 March 2024 and published on the University of Valladolid Sede Electrónica (electronic office) on 30/04/2024.
• The “Industrial Doctorate” mention aims to foster collaboration as well as the transfer and exchange of knowledge between the academic world and the social and economic world –either in the public or private sphere– to favour the job placement of research staff in the initial years of their professional career, to contribute to the employability of such staff, and to promote the incorporation of talent into the business community.

• Requirements for the accreditation of the quality of the thesis
It is structured in two parts: general criteria applicable to all programmes and specific criteria for each doctoral programme.

The rules governing the awarding of the Outstanding Doctorate Award seek to recognise and highlight the scientific quality of the best doctoral theses defended at the University of Valladolid.
• Instruction on the procedure for signing the minutes and casting the secret ballot for the defence and assessment of doctoral theses.
This instruction guarantees the secret vote for the awarding of the "Cum Laude" mention in those theses in which the President or the Member of the Committee acts by videoconference, as well as the signing of the minutes.

• Rules for the declaration of equivalence of foreign higher education degrees at the doctorate level
The procedure will be initiated by means of a request from the interested party addressed to the Rector through the electronic registry of the University of Valladolid with the following model: application form for equivalence to the academic level of doctor and accompanied by the documents listed on the back of the application form.

• Code of good practice for tutoring doctoral students and supervising doctoral theses
Royal Decree 99/2011, as amended by Royal Decree 576/2023 and which regulates official doctoral studies, is the reference framework for the organisation of doctoral studies and, with regard to thesis supervision, it recommends a good practice guide for the supervision and monitoring of doctoral theses. This EsDUVa good practice guide contains recommendations on thesis supervision and tutoring of doctoral students taken from the legislation and rules of the University of Valladolid and its Doctoral School, with the aim of clarifying the role of the doctoral student’s thesis supervisor and tutor.
